Every year the festival opens with a small ceremony at Kruttornet. There are speeches by the two mayors, a Swedish and a German mayor. The Medeltidsveckan noblemen, musicians and jesters (Gycklargruppen Pax) gather in front of the gate to start the Medieval parade. In 2005 the opening ceremony was different from the ones at previous editions of Medeltidsveckan, there was no stage and there were no performances.
